Registration has to be done with BMW-compatible diagnostics, and the coding must match what was actually fitted — registering an AGM as an EFB produces the wrong charging voltage. Most BMWs from the E90 generation onward carry the battery in the boot under the floor, vented to the outside, which is why fitting a non-AGM unit there is genuinely unsafe rather than just incorrect: a flooded battery can vent hydrogen into the cabin. Vehicles with the battery in the boot also route the positive supply through a safety terminal that must be reconnected correctly.

What happens if my BMW battery is not registered after replacement?
The Digital Motor Electronics module continues using the charging profile it had built for the old battery. In practice that means the new battery is mischarged from day one and typically fails within a year, often with start-stop disabled and intermittent electrical warnings along the way.
Can I fit a normal flooded battery to my BMW instead of an AGM?
No, and on boot-mounted installations it is a safety issue rather than a preference. A flooded battery vents hydrogen, and the boot location is designed around a sealed AGM. It will also fail quickly under start-stop cycling and the charging system will not treat it correctly.
Will I lose my iDrive settings and driver profiles?
Not if a memory saver is connected before the old battery comes out, which is standard on every BMW we do. Without one you would typically lose driver profiles, seat memory, radio presets and the clock, and the windows often need re-calibrating.
